REFECTORY (CAFE QM)

Café QM caters for up to 350 covers at any one time, designed to be in use all day as a facility that provides eating, drinking, congregation, meeting, and private study space.  It is capable of accommodating a variety of seating arrangements consistent with student use, private and public use.

The new building, located along a major student circulation route and close to the car park, extends from an old workshop which is now used to provide a high quality catering kitchen, and provides a large open space The main eating area has a floor area of 300 square metres on the ground floor and a mezzanine providing a further 68 square metres. A central curved wall captures the spiral staircase that serves the mezzanine area.  The front of the building is fully glazed and provides a visual link with the external piazza, defined by mature trees and providing an external extension to the building.  The roof of the new building extends over the glazed wall to provide covered external spaces and protect the interior from solar gain.
