Business Units, Forge Road, Kingsley

Macallan Penfold has recently achieved detailed planning permission on behalf of its client to demolish several agricultural buildings and storage containers and replace them with a new complex of small business units.  These units would be arranged as simple barn structures enclosing a courtyard space that provides access and parking. The design is based on traditional building spans and grids that provide ideal combinations of unit size and floor space configurations for such uses. In planning terms, the site is located in the countryside outside any Settlement Policy Boundary, although the immediate character is defined by the adjoining small hamlet - a residential and commercial grouping [...]

Coldrey Byre Hop Kilns, Lower Froyle, Hampshire

Macallan Penfold has recently been successful in achieving detailed planning and listed building consent for the repair and conversion of a complex of former hop kiln buildings associated with Coldrey Farm, a grade II listed country house on the south eastern edge of the village of Lower Froyle in Hampshire. Macallan Penfold were originally appointed to investigate and ascertain the available options to bring them back into feasible and viable use. The owners concluded that refurbishment and conversion to residential use represented the only realistic means of securing the future of the hop kilns. The approach that has been taken is predicated, first and foremost, on [...]

Worting House, Basingstoke

Macallan Penfold has recently secured planning consent to add two new courtyard buildings within the historic parkland setting of Worting House, a Georgian grade II listed building on the western edge of Basingstoke in Hampshire. The proposals, which total almost 1700 square metres, provide new office space and a fitness centre to complement both the main house and an adjoining listed Coach House, which are used as serviced offices. These new buildings will be arranged tightly within the curtilage of the existing Walled Garden, and set-down within the depth of the sloping site, thereby reducing the impact of their height. The intention is to provide a [...]

New Education Centre at Holy Cross Hospital, Haslemere

In October 2017 HRH Princess Alexandra opened the St. Hugh’s Education Centre at the Holy Cross Hospital in Haslemere, Surrey. The Hospital provides in-patient services for 40 long-stay patients who have severe and complex neurological disabilities. Their quality of life entirely depends on the availability of highly trained staff, special buildings and equipment. Macallan Penfold were appointed to design a new building that has not only significantly improved the available training and study facilities, but also provided much-needed administration offices that have brought support services staff together and freed-up valuable space for primary care functions. The building is arranged on two levels and takes advantage of [...]

Royal opening of redeveloped living accommodation at Treloar’s School and College

Macallan Penfold is proud to have worked on several projects for Treloar’s School and College over the years. Treloar’s provides education to young people with disabilities. In 2017, HRH The Countess of Wessex GCVO visited Treloar’s School and College to officially open the newly renovated Gauvain House. Built in the 1960s, when the profile of students was very different, both Evans and Gauvain were no longer fit for purpose to accommodate students with more complex and, often, multiple disabilities. Gauvain House was a 1960s building which was extensively redeveloped and reconfigured to provide 13 en-suite bedrooms with shared common room and dining room facilities on the [...]

Beggarwood Community Centre and Café in the Park, Basingstoke

Beggarwood Community Centre opened in early 2018 and had its conception during the community masterplanning exercise for Beggarwood Park, in south west Basingstoke. With a floor area of around 200 square metres, it provides spaces for community activities and meetings by local groups. The accommodation was derived from the priorities identified by local interest groups through an extensive consultation process. This stated that the scheme should be designed to blend in with the natural landscape and have separate individually-serviced function spaces, each with views over the park. One area is now used as a hall for hire for pilates classes, community groups and the brownies. The [...]

Construction is underway at Dove School House

Dove House School, a secondary school for children with moderate learning difficulties, has seen continuous growth in pupil numbers and has consequently suffered from a significant shortage of suitable space. This has resulted in the use of four blocks of single storey ‘Portakabin style’ temporary buildings, containing nine classrooms. These have offered poor access, non-compliant with the standards advised in BB102, coupled with inadequate support spaces to serve a school of this size. After undertaking feasibility exercises and consultation with the local Authority, Macallan Penfold proposed a new two-storey building, with a floor space of 960 square metres, that will allow the temporary buildings to be [...]
